After rallying in Union Square, about a thousand protestors marched towards the RNC in defiance of police orders. Police penned the protestors in at 30th Street and 8th Avenue and built a wall of riot geared officers half a block away. The two sides stared each other down. The protestors were told to disperse by 11:35 or face removal and arrest. Instead of leaving the protestors danced and sang. A marching band with tuba, accordion and conch shell spurred them on turning the dark and dangerous mood festive. The police surrounded the protestors on four sides and waited them out. By 1am the protestors lost most of their energy and much of their crowd. Indecision set in. Some wanted to go, others to stay and get arrested. Arguments began. The advantage of a leaderless collective is there is no one to blame. On the other hand, there is also no one who can inspire.
